Course Description
Study of literary texts is a year-long course that introduces sophomore students to literary and critical analysis through a sustained engagement with the British and American traditions.
The first semester offers a chronological and thematic exploration of British literature, tracing its evolution from the Old English Period to the modern era, examining how historical, philosophical, and linguistic transformations shaped the literary imagination.
The second semester turns to American literature, exploring its emergence from colonial narratives to modernist and postmodern forms, with particular attention to the interplay between individualism, identity, and the national experience.
This course will equip students with a mastery of hermeneutic skills, encompassing rigorous close reading and trenchant critical analysis, complemented by the essential competencies in scholarly writing pertinent to advanced literary study.
Furthermore, the curriculum aims to engender intellectual autonomy, sharpen aesthetic discernment, and facilitate a nuanced comprehension of literature's capacity to both mirror and contest prevailing cultural, political, and moral paradigms.
