Dear students,

Welcome to Introduction to Linguistics (2022-2023)

Introduction to Linguistics course aims to raise your awareness of what linguistics is, and how it studies all the linguistic phenomena in a scientific way. It prepares you for further in-depth study of other related subjects.

This course provides knowledge of the historical development of linguistics as a scientific discipline from the Greco-Roman antiquity to the present i.e. from Traditional Grammar to Modern Descriptive Linguistics.

Linguistics as a discipline tries to find answers to different issues such as the origin of language, the history of language, Language families (Comparative Philology), the emergence of linguistics as a science, language change and language variation, language structure, language functions etc. Moreover, it familiarizes you with universal characteristics of human language and linguistic diversity. In addition, Linguistics explains the major theories (Ferdinand de Saussure’s structuralism and Noam Chomsky’s generativism) and linguistic approaches to the study of language.

l Iook forward to working with you!

Kind regards,

The instructor
