The objectives of the subject:

 

The principal aim of this course is to familiarize students with the most prevailing concepts, theories and analytical tools in the study of language for specific/occupational purposes. The topics to be covered include such current issues as the multidisciplinarity, authenticity, research-base, ESP competences, ESP methodology, textual generic and discursive features, the issue of specificity, needs assessment, classifications

 

Pre-requisite (background) knowledge 

 

-       Introductory concepts to foreign language teaching and ESP

-       second language learning theories,

-       Sociolinguistics: English as an international language

-       Textual linguistics/discourse analysis: standards of textuality, discourse functions, structural patterns of texts

1-      Definitions of ESP

2-      Origin and developments of ESP

3-      ESP Classifications and typologies 

4-      ESP competences

5-      Authenticity in  ESP

6-      Needs analysis in ESP

7-      Linguistic research in ESP: register, text, discourse, corpus and genre analyses

8-      ESP teaching methods and issues
